Catawba Lands Conservancy Offers Spring Nature Hikes
Catawba Lands Conservancy announces its Spring Nature Series taking place Mar.17 – May 31. Four guided hikes on permanently conserved properties and one lecture are unique, free opportunities to experience nature within the community.
These events are open to the public, there is no cost. Space is limited - registration is required. Register at www.catawbalands.org or 704.342.3330 x210. Registration concludes at 2 p.m. the day prior to the hike or lecture.
WE’RE TALKING TURTLES — Monday, March 17, 7 P.M.—8:30 P.M.
Mecklenburg County, Davidson College
Davidson student Shannon Pittman and Dr. Mike Dorcas will regale you with results and lessons from their 2007 study on the endangered bog turtle population at the 15-acre Turtle Meadow Bog. Learn what their research tells us about the possible fate of these small reptiles. Light refreshments provided, space is limited.
A WALK ON THE WILDFLOWER SIDE— Saturday, April 5
Mecklenburg County, All Levels
Considered the most bio-diverse site in Mecklenburg County, themed hikes will begin throughout the day and are approximately 1 hour long. Space is limited.
LAUREL HILL HIKE — Saturday, April 26, 10 A.M. - Noon
Gaston County, Moderately Strenuous
Conservancy Board member and amateur botanist, Jean Woods will lead a hike through rocky cliffs, identifying a variety of plant species and Little and Long Creeks. Laurel Hill is home to several species of plants that are uncommon to the Southern Piedmont. Space is limited.
KILLIAN FOREST OWL PROWL — Friday, May 9, 7 P.M. - 9 P.M.
Lincoln County, Gaston County, All Levels
Landowner Kay Killian will lead you through Killian Forest on an evening hike - with a little luck you may hear a few owls, deer, and other nocturnal creatures. Space is limited.
LAND CONSERVATION CELEBRATION & ANNUAL MEETING — Saturday, May 31, 11 A.M. - 4 P.M. (Rain Date—Sunday, June 1) Gaston County, All Levels
Celebrate natural lands at Redlair Farm & Forest and the Conservancy’s Annual Meeting in one day. A wide array of activities for young and old, hikes through pristine woods and opportunities to see incredible natural wonders found in the Piedmont. More details at www.catawbalands.org.
