Catawba Lands Conservancy Offers Spring Nature Hikes


Catawba Lands Conservancy announces its Spring Nature Series taking place Mar.14 – May 30. Four guided hikes and one family festival on conservation projects are unique, free opportunities to experience nature within the community.

These events are open to the public, there is no cost. Space is limited - registration is required. Register at www.catawbalands.org or 704.342.3330 x210. Registration concludes at 2 p.m. the day prior to the hike or lecture.

Rock Springs Park Hike — Saturday, March 14, 10 a.m. — noon
Lincoln County, Moderate
Preserved in November 2008, the 116-acre Rock Springs Park is a pristine forest with three tributaries and one mile of frontage along Little Creek. Join Conservancy volunteer Ron Bost on a walk through one of the Conservancy’s most recently protected properties.

A Walk on the Wildflower Side — Saturday, April 4, hikes beginning throughout the day
Mecklenburg County, All levels
Join Catawba Lands Conservancy and Davidson Lands Conservancy for their annual spring hike at the Conservancy’s first protected property. Considered the most bio-diverse site in Mecklenburg County, you should see bloodroot, trillium, may apples, hepatica and many more native spring wonders in all their glory.

Along the South Fork — Saturday, May 2, 10 a.m. — noon
Gaston County, Moderate
The Conservancy is working with Pharr Yarns to permanently preserve 42 acres along the South Fork River. Get a sneak peek at this conservation project in progress.

Mountain Creek — Saturday, May 16, 10 a.m. — noon
Catawba County, Moderate
At the end of 2008, the Conservancy, in partnership with Catawba County, received approval for $2.16 million in funding from the N.C. Clean Water Management Fund to purchase and protect the 589-acre Mountain Creek property. Enjoy a walk and see firsthand how this property permanently protects the region’s water supply.
